I gagged as the tumbleweed rolled off my tongue and
Onto the highway as we drove along
Like our lost love it roamed the mesas
And hit all the cars from different places

It formed in my belly and grew into a tree
With tiny twigs poking out of me
Pieces broke off and fell in the soup
You swallowed them not knowing, ooooooh

I rolled you, you rolled me, tangled in the tumbleweed

We were pulling at our strings trying to knit each other free
From that human spoil, from that senseless debris
Pulling out of driveways and climbing out on peaks
Trying to make it all right but wasting all our weeks

I soaked up all that heat from those mineral springs
I couldn’t help but feel that I was bumping into things
That tumbleweed came towards me and it knocked me down
I slipped and I went tumbling back to town

I rolled you, you rolled me, tangled in the tumbleweed

The glow from the stove gave us a kind of home
With comforting sounds on the radio
We didn’t see it coming that tumbling weed
We were oh so happy and so alone

Disintegrated, obliterated,
Not much left but tiny traces
A million miles and still there are shadows,
Highs and lows of yesterday’s battles

I was caught unaware, I didn’t think I would care about someone so fun, so light, so new

We sailed every day in a great big bay, tacking to that rock-musette

I opened my eyes real early today, I had the feeling that I wanted to stay there
So I looked up at the ceiling, ‘til the feeling went away

I walked outside and the sun was so bright, not too long ago, it had been night
The dogs of time were chasing me down and I wanted to fight it
Should I go left or right or should I stay on target?

Stories that I know so well, I like to tell, but they’re a fiction
The phoenix and the unicorn, like uniforms become an addiction

I met a man on a train outa town, he looked me up and he looked me down
He said “in the end you’ll find all that’s pink turns to brown”

Well that stumped me and I turned my head, I had the idea to go back to bed
I checked my pockets … all I heard was this sound

Sometimes in the summer time I can go along and try to pretend
It’s all as it’s supposed to be, a book’s a book, a tree’s a tree
And that’s the end, … of the story, but not really
